Greywood Primary Academy

About Us

Origins and Background

Our new school has been built as part of the Free School Presumption scheme. This is where the Local Authority (in this case Staffordshire County Council) identifies a need for new school places and then works with the DfE to build a school and choose a suitable Trust to run it.

The school was therefore built to meet demand for places from the St John’s Grange and Cricket Lane housing developments in South Lichfield. Since being chosen to run the school, Primitas has continued to work closely with the County Council and the Department for Education to prepare for the arrival of the first pupils in September 2026.

The School Name

To help with the naming of the school, a public consultation was carried out which shows the Trust’s commitment to engaging positively with the community in accordance with our educational mission.

The general public showed a real interest in what the new school should be called and many suggestions were received. Greywood Primary Academy was eventually chosen because the word Greywood is imbued with layers of meaning which resonate with our Trust:

  • Our Trust is passionate about the heritage of the communities that our schools belong to and serve. And ‘Greywood’ is intrinsically linked to the historical origins and meaning of Lichfield’s name, referencing the ash and elm trees which dominated the landscape when the ancient settlement was being formed and gaining its identity.
  • Our new school will become a flagship within our Trust for ecological and environmental awareness and sustainability.
  • Recognition of the importance of our merger with Greywood Multi-Schools Trust in September 2023, which provided us with the passion, local knowledge and additional capacity required to open a new school in Lichfield
